Indoor Air Quality Toolkit
These products are some of the best tools you can find in order to improve your indoor air quality within your home. You don't have to have every single one of these in your home, but using the ones that are best for your family will help you improve your already healthy lifestyle.
#1 INDOOR AIR QUALITY MONITOR
The Awair Indoor Air Quality Monitor is one of the best tools you can invest in when it comes to your family's health. It monitors the allergens inside as well as toxins and chemicals. You can monitor everything right on your phone and customize the tips and preferences to your family's needs. It also monitors the temperature, humidity and CO2 levels.
#2 HIGH QUALITY FURNACE FILTERS
If your home has either a forced air furnace or a whole house air exchange system, you will want to make sure you're using a high quality filter. The filter you use can either allow allergens and particles to be filtered through your home, or it can filter out those unwanted contaminants. Nordic Pure is my pick for a top brand that is also cost effective. I also suggest you purchase a box and keep it in your home so that you never forget to replace your filter.
#3 CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR
A carbon monoxide detector is a must in ANY home. I recommend you have one near any bedrooms and near your utility/laundry room. Carbon Monoxide is an odorless gas that is often undetected until it's too late. This one is a smoke/carbon monoxide combination detector you can easily install without the assistance of an electrician.
If you do purchase an AWAIR monitor, however, you can monitor the CO2 levels with that as well. Either way, make sure you have at least one or two in your home. You could prevent a potentially fatal incident from happening.
#4 HOME RADON DETECTOR
A constant Radon detector will continuously monitor the Radon levels in the area you place it. You can recallibrate it each time you move it to get an accurate reading. This is great for anyone who has bedrooms or offices in the basement. Any place in a lower level that you or a family member is spending a lot of time is a place where Radon can become potentially dangerous. The Corentium is a great tool and I use it with my own clients every day.
Radon is the #1 cause of cancer among non-smokers and is completely odorless. It's only detected by either an electronic monitor or a manual, one time use charcoal test.
#5 HIGH QUALITY AIR PURIFIER
An air purifier with the right technology can help "scrub" the air particles and clean the air. The BreatheSmart by Alen actually uses filters with silver, which is a completely natural antimicrobial in their filters. This filter automatically detects and adjusts its use based on the current indoor air quality. This helps preserve the filter and prolong the life of the machine.
You can actually purify a larger living space of up to 1,100 square feet with this one. Plus there are different package options you can purchase if you want to filter out odors, pet dander or mold and bacteria.
#6 ESSENTIAL OILS & DIFFUSER
Essential oils can not only boost your mood, but it can set the tone for your day. Many of the essential oils that I recommend can actually purify and clean the air by removing bacteria, viruses and reduce allergens from things like dustmites.
Young Living Essential Oils is my brand of choice because they are one of the few companies that allows a third party to come in an certify their oils and the quality of their oils. Their line of child-safe oils and products is incredible and I can tell you from personal experience that they have an amazing community of members to answer any questions you might have.
#7 REFILLABLE SPRAY MOP
Dust is a huge enemy of healthy indoor air. It can harbor things like bacteria, viruses, pesticide chemicals and mold spores. I love a mop that uteilzes a water tank that you can fill with your own solution. Dry mops can just push the dust around from corner to corner, while wet mops will contain the dust and stop it from being pushed up into the air.
The refillable water tank allows you to mix up your own healthy and safe cleaning solution, or you can purchase a concentrated cleaner that won't add chemicals to your indoor air. And finally, the reusable pads are economic and a better choice than use and toss options.
#8 HAND HELD DUST MITE VACUUM
Upholstered furniture, mattresses and pillows are extremely difficult to clean and remove dust and dust mites from. It can be virtually impossible to find a safe solution. There are sprays you can mix up, but they also add moisture to your home and your furniture, which can create an even more welcoming environment for dust mites to thrive (plus mold and mildew can form too).
This is a great tool for cleaning those upholstered surfaces and even carpets by removing the dust with a HEPA filter and using UV light to kill any other contaminants and bactera.
#9 PORTABLE DEHUMIDIFIER
Humidity and moisture are the #1 cause of indoor air quality problems that arise in most homes. If the humidity were kept at a lower level the problematic issues like mold, mildew and dust mites could be almost completely eradicated. Using a humidifier can help remove some of that moisture from the air and can help keep the air comfortable as well as keep those problems at bay.
You need to make sure that you empty your dehumidifier basin often though to ensure that bacteria and mold aren't beginning to grow in the stagnant water.
Using this machine in a bathroom or in a damp area of the home is a great tool to keep the area healthy for your family.
